Embracing Innovation: How Technology is Enhancing Life at CHI Living Communities

Across CHI Living Communities, innovative technology is being integrated in thoughtful ways to improve efficiency, support staff, and enrich the lives of residents. From smart communication tools that connect families and care teams, to dining room robots that deliver meals with a smile (and a birthday tune!), these advancements are creating a more connected, responsive, and joyful experience for everyone on campus.

At The Commons of Providence in Sandusky, Ohio, residents are experiencing firsthand how modern tech can make everyday life smoother and more enjoyable—starting with a pair of helpful new “employees” in the dining room. Earlier this year, the senior living community welcomed two Servi robots by Bear Robotics to assist with food delivery and bussing duties.

“I was leery of them because I thought they would have issues,” said resident Tom Cornell. But residents quickly warmed up to the robots, who now serve meals and clear plates. “They sing us happy birthday and tell us to have a good day—that’s kind of cute,” added resident Barbara Stahley.

Executive Director Dr. Seantell Amison shared that the robots are helping to solve real-world staffing challenges while boosting service quality. “The primary function of these robots is to automate repetitive tasks, allowing employees to focus more on resident interactions and enhancing the overall dining experience,” she said. “The advantages include reducing physical strain on dietary employees, improving efficiency in food service, and increasing overall resident satisfaction.”

With advanced sensors and autonomous navigation, the Servi robots move smoothly through busy dining rooms, supporting both residents and team members. Staff were trained onsite by Bear Robotics to ensure seamless integration and safety in the dining environment.

The Commons of Providence is the second CHI Living Communities campus to implement this technology. Linus Oakes Village in Roseburg, Oregon has been using two dining robots—affectionately named Rosie and Bender—since Thanksgiving 2024.

“Our Bear Robotics robots have transformed daily life for both residents and staff—lightening the load during short staffing, reducing physical strain on employees, and sparking joy and amazement among residents,” said Charles Yoder, Director of Dietary at Linus Oakes. “They’re not just helpful—they’re a glimpse into the future, right in our dining room."

Dining room attendant Lillian Skomars echoed the benefits: “Using the robots have made my job so much smoother and efficient. Not having to wait for a server to run the food and being able to simply send it to the desired table helps not only me, but the servers as well. Service was improved upon the arrival of the robots.”

Executive Director Ryan Fugate added, “They’ve enhanced the overall experience for both residents and staff, making mealtime smoother, faster, and more enjoyable for everyone.”

In addition to robotics, all campuses are using Serenity Engage Echo devices—a communication solution designed specifically for senior living. These voice-activated devices allow residents to easily check daily menus, hear announcements, receive event reminders, and even listen to personalized messages from family members or staff.

By reducing the need for printed materials or in-person reminders, this technology supports both independence and connection. Staff can update information in real time, while residents get quick answers and friendly voices at the touch of a button—or a simple voice command.

As more CHI Living Communities campuses explore and adopt emerging technology, the goal remains clear: to create environments where residents feel cared for, engaged, and empowered—while supporting the teams who serve them.
